What are the word limits of the Account of Professional Practice (APP)?
The word limits are: 1,700 words for AFHEA, 3,300 words for FHEA and 6,000 words for SFHEA.
Is the reference list also included in the word count of the APP?
No, your reference list is not included in the word count.
What is the format for in-text citations and the reference list?
Academic references should be made using Harvard referencing style.
What is the requirement for the format of the APP (e.g. font type or size)?
The online application system only accepts plain text. NO images, tables or diagrams can be uploaded. The document must be in PDF format and be under 3MB.
One of the referees does not return the supporting statement to me, what should I do?
You may contact the referee and remind him/ her that the supporting statement should be returned to you for submission. If the referee does not do so, it is better if you can find another colleague to be your referee.
One of the referees does not use the template. Will it be accepted?
No, all supporting statements must be written on the template given. A signature is required.
How much does it cost to apply for fellowship?
There are two routes to apply for fellowship. Route 1 is via direct application to the Advance HE at £220 (HKU is a subscribing institution). Route 2 is through an Advance HE accredited institutional programme, e.g. HKU Advance HE Fellowship Scheme, at NO cost.
Who should I look for to be my referees?
Referees will be expected to have current or recent experience of working in Higher Education. Your referees should have worked closely with you and be familiar with your recent practice in higher education.
What are the requirements of the supporting statement?
Supporting statement must be PDF files. Also, the file size for two supporting statements cannot exceed 3 MB. They must be signed by hand.
Can I delete or edit the files I have uploaded?

Can I send my application via email?
No, you must use the submission link provided in the HKU Advance HE website. Documents that are sent through email will NOT be considered.
How do I know if HKU has received my application?
After completing your submission online, you will receive an acknowledgement email from us, please check the mailbox you have provided during registration.
Will there be an interview after submitting the application?
No, your application will be considered by the review panel merely based on your application and supporting statements. The processing time is approximately 8 weeks. When the application has been to panel, you will be contacted via email regarding the outcome and, if successful, how to download your fellowship certificate.
What if my submission is not successful? What should I do?
If your application is “Revise and resubmit”, you will receive feedback on what needs to be addressed and will have two weeks to resubmit. You can continue to work with your mentor. Once resubmitted, the application will go back to the two original reviewers for a final outcome of approved or not approved. If a re-submission is not approved, the applicant need to re-register on the scheme.
