Abstracts
In its relatively short 112-year history, the National University of Singapore has experienced dramatic growth. It started life as a medical school with just 23 students in 1905 – today in 2017, it is a large comprehensive university with 3 campuses hosting close to 38,000 students and 6,000 faculty and research staff. Perhaps the steepest change in more recent memory from the point of view of a faculty member is the change to a research-intensive university within a 15-year period. If the years beginning from about 2000 was to transform NUS into an institution with research impact, the years from around 2008 onwards can be considered to be the time when NUS began to focus more actively on fostering an excellent, scholarly culture in teaching.

In this session, I wish to reflect on how my institution attempts to bring about specific shifts in its teaching culture. I will illustrate with particular initiatives (e.g. the establishment of the NUS Teaching Academy in 2009, the reformed Educator Track policy in 2015, and the on-going critical reviews of established practices) that have been put in place to lay the foundation for a culture of (teaching) excellence; and in the process, transform the institutional mindset as a whole.
