The Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) is a new interdisciplinary family of programmes at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) that are inspired by a similar programme offered by University College London. This Teaching Exchange Fellowship (TEF) examined ways to enhance HKU’s BASc programmes based on the lessons learnt by colleagues in UCL within their programme. In early 2020, Tom J. Barry visited UCL and conducted meetings with faculty members and students and also conducted observations of select courses from within the BASc programme. The visit highlighted several elements of the BASc programme that could be developed, including the focus placed on problem-based learning, the structure of academic advising, opportunities to involve students in research, and informal opportunities to engage students outside of the classroom. Opportunities to further consolidate and formalize the relationship between HKU and UCL’s BASc programmes were also discussed.
About the Speaker
Tom received his PhD in Experimental Psychopatholgy from the University of Leuven, after which he worked as a Visiting Scholar in the Anxiety and Depression Research Centre at the University of California, Los Angeles (US) and then as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology and Neuroscience, King’s College London (KCL). During his time at KCL Tom was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship by the UK’s National Institute of Health Research as well as The Institute of Psychiatry’s Independent Research Award. In 2017, Tom joined the University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor (Research) where he founded the Experimental Psychopathology Lab. In 2020 Tom began his role as the Programme Director of the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences that is situated within the Faculty of Social Sciences but which also spans the Faculties of Arts and Sciences. This programme is interdisciplinary in nature and, in line with this approach, Tom’s research explores the cognitive, behavioural and biological mechanisms involved in the emergence of mental health problems and their treatment (website: hkuepl.com).
